    Former Sen. Jesse Helms dies at 86

    July 4: Former Republican Senator Jesse Helms has died. He was 86. NBC's Martin Savidge reports.  (MSNBC)Former Sen. Jesse Helms, who built a career along the fault lines of racial politics and battled liberals, Communists and the occasional fellow Republican during 30 years in Congress, died Friday. He was 86.

    Fire keeps out Big Sur July 4th visitors
