Family mourns loss of son, killed in Iraq

By Josh Witsman

PARTRIDGE, Kansas -- A Reno County family is grieving after learning their 18-year-old son has died in the line of duty. Corporal Peter Wagler died Monday when the tank he was in hit a road side bomb in Iraq.

Peter’s family learned about his death on Tuesday. They sat down with KSN on Thursday to remember the person he was.

Outside the small town of Partridge, Kansas a family is dealing with grief after learning their son paid the ultimate sacrifice.

"From his perspective we know what he would have said -- he had no regrets," said David Wagler, Peter’s father.

No regrets from an 18-year-old that lived life to the fullest. His family describes him as mischievous, personable and possessing a deep faith.

Peter was 17 when he decided the military was the road for him.

"It wasn’t our preference and he had such a good attitude. It wasn’t just a whim. This was a long term goal of his," said David.

"The more we learn, the more proud I become of him and the example for Jesus that he was," said David.

"Wherever he went he had a good time and people liked him for that," said Vonya Wagler.

Peter’s family says, since learning about the death, they have heard from Peter’s friends across the country expressing their sympathy. Their friends in Reno County have done the same.

"As the scripture says, when part of the body hurts, it all hurts. So they’re all hurting," said Roger Neir, Berean Baptist Church.

They are hurting from the loss of what everyone agrees was a fine person, fine son, and a fine soldier. They are the aspects that made Peter Wagler who he was -- a man who did it all and lived life to the fullest.

"He said ’I would rather live my life fully and die young than live a dull, boring life,’" said David.

The Wagler family said funeral services are pending for Peter. They are waiting for his body to arrive back home in the states.
